Andrew Cain was a professor at North Georgia College in Dahlonega in 1932 when he was asked by the Lumpkin County Grand Jury to write the county's history. Given the many hardships researchers endured in those days of the Great Depression, and the difficulty in accessing archived materials, Cain's work is a fitting monument to his hard work and a useful record derived from sources no longer available to today's researchers. Lumpkin County, the gold capitol of North Georgia, was formed in 1832 from Cherokee, Habersham and Hall Counties. This book by a "Native Son" traces the early history of the area, covers the economic and social impact of the gold discovery and details the general history of the area up to 1932. Included is extensive discussion about the Cherokee inhabitants who were removed forcibly in 1838, information about the U.S. Branch Mint which operated here from 1838 to 1861, service records of about 1,000 soldiers serving in 4 different wars, records of 3500 marriages from 1863 to 1932, extensive narrative of the early history of North Georgia College (now North Georgia College & State University)... and much more ... including numerous old black and white photos of the people and places which figured prominently in the county's history. In 2004, we had 200 copies of this venerable volume reprinted and now have only a few copies left. Be sure to include this volume in your special history book collection!
