Dr.Amy Blackmarr
Amy Blackmarr is a South-Georgia native who lived in the Midwest for twenty years. Best known for her nature essays set in the rustic houses she has lived in, she was a featured commentator for public radio for five years. She has authored three critically acclaimed books: Going to Ground (1997), House of Steps (1999), and Above the Fall Line (2003). A Madison Self Fellow with a doctorate in English from the University of Kansas, Blackmarr presently lives in South Georgia. In 2004 Blackmarr was named Georgia Author of the Year for her essays and was nominated for several other awards, including the Southern Environmental Law Center's prestigious Phillip D. Reed Memorial Award for Outstanding Writing on the Southern Environment. Her first book, Going to Ground, was named in 2005 to the Georgia Center for the Book's Top-25 List of Books All Georgians Must Read. Blackmarr frequently speaks about writing, the role of nature in the creative process, and the personal essay genre and from time to time continues her work with public radio.
